Kathleen – Undergraduate Cadet

When I sat down for my second interview with DFK Hirn Newey, I was sure that I wasn’t going to accept the position if it was offered to me. Working in tax at 17 seemed a bit daunting. However at the time, I had not started studying yet and had no idea what accounting was like in the real world, so I decided to give it a go. Looking back, I am so glad that I did, as there is always something new to learn and every client provides a different challenge.

Working as a cadet, I am able to alternate between full time study with part time work, and full time work with part time study, making every semester different to the last and providing me with the perfect work-life balance. This process has allowed me to stay continually interested in both work and university, as I swap my focus each semester.

From my first day, everyone in the firm was very welcoming and they encouraged me to learn and ask for help as much as I needed. I get to interact with my manager and partner on a regular basis and so I am constantly provided with feedback and ways to improve. Being able to work in an accounting firm while studying has been one of the best decisions I have made, as I have the opportunity to apply my knowledge in real life situations.

Tom – Graduate (former Cadet)

I commenced my cadetship with DFK Hirn Newey in 2005. As a cadet, I have been continually supported throughout the whole process of completing my degree. I have been given time off for study, and have had the opportunity to draw on the extensive and diverse firm knowledge by asking staff at manager and partner levels their thoughts on different areas of my study.

While you may think a cadet would only do photocopying and filing, I have had the opportunity to be a part of teams at DFK Hirn Newey that have sold national companies to offshore entities, I have visited businesses and have had a vast array of client contact.

DFK Hirn Newey has provided me with a wealth of experience, training and support and I hope to offer this to the next generation of cadets who are now coming through our firm.

Mary - Manager

DFK Hirn Newey has provided me with the opportunity to work on an interesting client base and on issues beyond the day to day compliance work, all in a family friendly environment. The firm has great systems, which allows me to work from home if required and with the added benefit of flexible working hours I have been able to keep my professional skills up to date while raising a young family.

The training provided is excellent and all the accountants are encouraged to participate in these sessions. The DFK Hirn Newey cadet program ensures that the firm continues to attract younger accountants – this promotes a culture of learning and mentoring.

DFK Hirn Newey has a diverse range of successful clients. I find it challenging and rewarding to be a part of the growth of both DFK Hirn Newey and their clients.
